PABLO PICASSO: Love and Death. La Suite Vollard.

Mirbach Palace (show Contact)
9. 9. 2011 - 13. 11. 2011
Curator: Fernando Castro Borrego

The exhibition, organized in cooperation with prestigious Museo Reina Sofia, one of the biggest galleries of contemporary art in the world makes available 100 etchings created between the period of 1930 – 1937.   Apart from the series Suite Vollard a scatch of the most known picture Guernica will be also displayed.

An agnostic conception regarding life is manifest in the images on the 100 copper engravings that make up the Suite Vollard by Pablo Picasso. The conflict of opposites explains the nature of things. The two main protagonists, the sculptor and Minotaur, hold contrary positions. The first contemplates his creation, remaining distant and meditative, while the second, guided by his instincts, does not think about the consequence of his actions. The game of opposites is always present in the evolution of the drama in play. Collection called according to the name  of Ambroise Vollard, the art dealer and contains  97 copper plates and three portraits of art dealer himself.

The core of the Suite Vollard is centred on the image of the naked female body that becomes an embodiment of the idea of beauty’s fullness and perfection. But Picasso is not a simple "commentator" interested in describing one of the major issues of Western art history: the nude female body. His interpretation of women’s naked bodies involves not only the victory of the flesh, but also times triumph. Regarding his female nudes reclining on a sofa (femmes dans un fauteuil), he states the following: "I aim to catch the movement of flesh and blood through time. I wish to highlight the anguish of the flesh which, even in the hour of its triumph, ' beauty', is startled by signs that announce the alterations of time."

Spanish artist  of Basque origin  Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October, 1881 in Malaga. His avantgarde and fantasy-driven works of art have fundamentally changed rules of fine art of those times.  He pioneered cubism, an art movement that created new form from the wreckage of broken forms. Among his top works of art belongs  Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) or Guernica (1937).
