GMB Vision

Bratislava City Gallery was established in 1961 as an independent cultural organisation under jurisdiction of the capital city of the Slovak Republic. Its core mission is purposefully and systematically to collect, professionally process, protect, and document items from the field of visual arts, and to make them publicly available in the form of temporary and permanent exhibitions, scientific research, educational activities, and publishing. The gallery is methodically building its collection as part of the cultural heritage of the city of Bratislava. It currently cares for more than 35,000 collection items, documenting the development of fine art in Slovakia from the Gothic period to the present day. The collection further includes a set of works by Central European Old Masters.
The gallery also contributes to the protection and management of immovable cultural heritage, as the Mirbach Palace and Pálffy Palace buildings which house the gallery have the status of national cultural monuments.
Bratislava City Gallery understands its role in a much broader context than is commonly expected from such specialised institutions. The Gallery's professional team is continually seeking new ways to link its work with other disciplines in a manner that makes art accessible to an increasingly wider audience. Gallery spaces are progressively being utilised to create a friendly and inspiring public environment that engages local artists, communities, and citizens with special needs.
GMB increasingly engages with the city's exterior public spaces through activities aimed at rescuing, preserving, and creating works of fine art in the various districts of Bratislava. It also offers an educational programme that focuses on the theme of public spaces, their value, and their role within life in urban society.

Education

Every year, the GMB Education Department prepares more than 200 programmes for children, youths, teachers, seniors, and parents on parental leave. In parallel, it creates exhibition-related programmes for adults who have cultivated a relationship with visual art over a longer period. At present, the Education Department is engaged in establishing a year-round learning centre within the premises of Mirbach Palace.

Publishing

Bratislava City Gallery publishes catalogues for its exhibitions, monographs of artists whose works are represented in the gallery collection, and publications summarising the results of its scientific and research activities. These publications are available at the gallery's sales outlets and from the distribution network of bookstores that offer art literature.
