Martin Vongrej (1986) focuses on installations that interpret the specific space through their specific logic. According to this logic, the difference between a picture hanging on the wall and a spatial installation lies in the fact that space which is open to the viewer to enter also includes the space behind the viewer´s back. It is the difference between the surface and space. The attractiveness of the seen and attractiveness of the imaginary. The catchiness of the meaning and the catchiness of the view. Inspired by the tradition of American abstract expressionism, its practice of building the space without perspective, presentation without representation, as well as by the tradition of Slovak conceptual art, the triptych created for Mirbach Palace uses gravitation as both the medium and the meaning.

Martin Vongrej (1986) is an artist living and working in Bratislava. He made his international debut in 2010 at Manifesta 8 – the European Biennial of Contemporary Art in Spain with the work Self-Observing Consciousness (Pozorujúce sa vedomie). He presented his work in many group exhibition, for instance, “The Process of Calculating One's Position” (NARS Foundation, New York, 2019), “Useful Photography – Photography in Contemporary Slovak Art” (Slovak National Gallery, Bratislava, 2018), ”ORIENT” (KIM?, Riga; Bozar, Brussels; Bunkier Sztuki, Krakow, 2018), “Non-profit & Profit” (SpazioA, Pistoia, 2014), etc. Solo exhibition (selection): “Seeing Thoughts” (Phoinix Bratislava, 2020), “Pre-nature” (amt_project, Milan, 2016), “The Meaning” (Soda Gallery, Bratislava, 2018), “The Inverse” (HIT Gallery, 2018), “Seven Uncountable Lines” (Futura, Karlin Studios, CZ, 2017), or “2014” (Moravian Gallery, Brno, 2014). He received the scholarship from the Kone Foundation (Saari Residence, Finland, 2014) and the Terra Foundation (US, 2015). His work is represented in the collection of Fondazione Morra Greco.
