Koloman Sokol: Bar Dancers, 1932

Bratislava City Gallery owns a large Collection of Twentieth Century Prints and Illustrations. A deep-rooted tradition based on the expressive language of Koloman Sokol, further developed in the humanist and religious bequest of Vincent Hložník has manifested a new scope within the imaginative line of Slovak art since the 1960s. The significance of Albín Brunovský, Vladimír Gažovič and Dušan Kállay has reached beyond the borders of our country and the artists have received many prestigious international awards. The representatives of the younger generation have followed the path of the major protagonists of Slovak art. The development in the field of illustrations, particularly in children’s books, has led to many unique projects. Book illustration has gained international reputation at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava as well. The concept of the exhibition ranks it among the most prestigious world events of its kind. In the 1970s and 1980s Bratislava City Gallery acquired many complete book illustrations.

Curator: PhDr. Ivan Jančár
