The Bratislava City Gallery´s collection of old masters drawings and prints contains over 10,000 works on paper made before 1900. Nevertheless, only a few dozens were engraved (fecit or sculpcit) or drawn (pinxit or invenit) by women artists. Being presented for the first time, most works have been unknown, lost and invisible. The interpretation of prints offers insights into the social and political environment of different countries at different times. The insight into “women´s” art history will introduce us to the life and work of particular women artists. We will learn more about their origin, education or art practice. Their inspirations, examples and techniques will materialize presence of their absence in the history of art.
The prints are presented along with a contemporary installation Presence of Absence / Absence of Presence by Kata Mach, the artist addressing feministic topics. Apart from works from the Gallery´s collection, the exhibition presents prints from the collections of the Slovak National Gallery, the University Library in Bratislava, Ernest Zmeták Gallery in Nové Zámky, or Turiec Gallery in Martin.
