Under the Open Sky, The Barbizon Artists

The project Under the Open Sky – the Barbizon Artists focuses on the presentation of works by artists working in Barbizon near Paris, which played a significant role in the development of Slovak painting in the early 20th century. The history of European painting of the 19th and 20th centuries would be unimaginable without the Barbizon artists. In spite of their immense importance, the works of these artists have never been displayed in Slovakia before. The Bratislava City Gallery has been given an opportunity to present a unique collection of the Barbizon artists from the Regional Art Gallery in Liberec. The Barbizon artists were the first in the history of painting to paint outdoor (en plen air), trying to capture the atmospheric phenomena on their canvases. The project puts emphasis on selected works of the representatives of the Barbizon School, which create integral part of the history of fine art.
The exhibition has been financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.
