Gothic Panel Painting and Sculpture: Reinstallation of the exposition

The small exposition Gothic Panel Painting and Sculpture in Pálffy Palace was first presented to the public in 1988 after a general reconstruction of the building, which had been assigned to the Bratislava City Gallery. The Gallery acquired all the exhibits from the collections of the Bratislava City Museum. Most of them were presented in the 1973 special exhibition in the Church of the Poor Clares, which served and still serves as a multifunctional cultural space.

As a part of the municipal collection, many objects were attributed a local provenance. However, a more comprehensive survey has shown that they are works of sacral art of various origins, which come from significant local collections. They are most likely fragments of some unpreserved altar architectures, which we do not know how exactly it looked like and which we date to the period between the turn of the 14th century and the first third of the 16th century.

Although not all of them are reflective of the Gothic and early Renaissance art in Slovakia, they are among the oldest items in the Gallery´s collection. To mention just one example: Madonna of Vajnory, oak wood carving probably made in a workshop in Regensburg (eastern Bavaria), perhaps in the late 13th century. It was named after a site of discovery.

During over thirty years of existence, the exposition curated by a long-time collection curator, PhDr. Želmíra Grajciarová has remained virtually unchanged. Only in 2020, thanks to financial support from the Bratislava Self-governing Region, the Gallery could have started to implement a new conceptual and visual design by re-arranging the exhibits and replacing some installation elements. Our long-term vision is a gradual total reconstruction of premises and sensitive modern installation, which will provide the visitors with more detailed information on individual exhibits and the era of late middle ages in our region.
