20TH AND 21TH CENTURY DRAWINGS, PRINTS AND ILLUSTRATIONS
The City Gallery of Bratislava houses a large collection of 20th and 21th century drawings, prints and illustrations. A deep-rooted tradition based on the expressive language of Koloman Sokol, further developed in the humanist and religious message of Vincent Hložník has seen a new blossoming in the 1960s in the imaginative line. The reputation of artists like Albín Brunovský, Vladimír Gažovič and Dušan Kállay went beyond the borders of our country. They were followed by many representatives of the younger generation of artists whose works often move on the very edge of graphic expression. Many extraordinary projects have also been realized in the area of illustration, in particular children´s books illustration, which earned international reputation due to the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava. In the 1970s and 1980s, the City Gallery of Bratislava acquired many complete book illustrations, and managed to put together a unique collection from this area of fine arts.
