In February 2017, three hundred years have passed since the birth of Adam Friedrich Oeser, a painter, engraver, sculptor and art teacher. On this occasion, the Bratislava City Gallery has mounted an exhibition mapping the life and work of the native of Pressburg who became a reputable figure of a cultural and artistic life in Dresden, Weimar and Leipzig. His life and work are interesting for the scholars in the area of not only the art history but also literature, pedagogy and book culture. He has been perceived primarily as a spiritual driving force of early classicism, a friend and a teacher of the giants such as Johann Joachim Winckelmann or Johann Wolfgang Goethe. But he was also a prolific, though not always fully recognised visual artist. In Slovak collection-building institutions, his oeuvre is best represented in our collection that is based on collection items from the Bratislava City Museum, which focused on the acquisition of objects relating to the local environment. As Oeser´s beginnings as an artist were linked with his native town and nearby Vienna, it is opportune to provide him with an appropriate place in the history of Slovak art. The catalogue Adam Friedrich Oeser (Pressburg 1717 – Leipzig 1799) was published with the financial support of Slovak Arts Council and the grant system of the Bratislava self-governing region. We would also like to thank the institutions that borrowed the artworks for the exhibition, namely the Slovak National Gallery and the Congregation of Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Bratislava.
