The exhibition project ´Latter-day Romanticism‘ with a secondary title ´Nature and landscape, nostalgic pathos and utopian idealism as principles in the artistic creation of the rising generation´ focuses on pointing out the analogical signs of Slovak contemporary visual art and art in the age of romanticism. The exposition demonstrates the parallels between current artistic utterance and Romantic movement of the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century through thematic range of works, their composition and overall atmosphere. The proximity with romanticism is also accentuated by selected artists as themselves, whose attitudes toward life and thinking are oftentimes antinomic to the majority of the society. Through observing the concrete phenomenon in the artistic creation of the given generation the exhibition intends to rivet attention on the new tendency in contemporary art and by that to contribute to its theoretical discourse.

The concept is orientated to the authors mostly born at the second half of 1980s, thus to the generation growing up at a democratic arrangement and not affected directly by an ideology or practices of previous communistic regime. In spite of the ability to live and create on a comfortable and de facto unlimited platform of free expression, the chosen group of representatives is remonstrating against the setting of present world, as well as against its artistic operation. As though they could not adapt to the preferences of a capitalistic art market that prefers rather a gesture than a content-based message or technical aspect of the work of art or that requires large management skills of the artist. Their own siting to the age of post-information society with its rapid pace, exaggerated consuming and low values is for them essentially disadvantageous. Accordingly, from the surveyed line of young authors can be felt some disappointment, disenchantment from unfulfilled aims and ambitions, scepticism, irony and sarcasm that they immediately reflect to their production.

The exhibition presents the works from ten artists that were created in recent years, so they are confirming a high degree of recency of the mentioned issue. At the same time the exhibited works include variable mediums (painting, photography, object, video, digital drawing) whereby drawing the attention to a broader span of the observed appearance in artistic production and, after all, justifying its mere existence. These works reflect various positions of romanticizing opinion: escape to the nature and landscape motives –specific or imaginary, melancholy, nostalgia for a past, utopian dreaming or idealisation of an unfavourable matter of fact. Prevailing is emotional hue and intimate, dumpish character. ´Latter-day Romanticism´ is speaking about lyricizing of the contemporary world by fresh generation of artists as their personal instrument of escape before the (tragic) reality.

The exhibition is a winning project of the 12th year of the programme of City Gallery Bratislava ´Scholarship of Radislav Matuštík´ that is intended for students and young curators.
