Canary paintings of 20th century

Mirbach Palace (show Contact)

Two points characterise the outcome of Canarian artistic production of the 20th century. The first is of a dialectic nature and sheds light on the relationship between what is local and international, between what is endogenous and exogenous.  The wealth of endemic treasures which the Canary Islands possess, and of which so many landscape painters have benefitted from; coexist thanks to the geographical situation of the archipelago and its mild climate, along with the fact that its an acclimatisation territory in which many species from other countries have settled into with ease, to the extent that they ended up changing the landscape and mingling with the original species of the land. The Islands were never isolated. This is true both in nature as in art’s culture. The dialectic tension which this relationship has generated has always been fruitful. The second point refers to the legend that the Canaries were a Paradise (the Hesperides Garden myth). The islands space was limited by this story, symbolically told through poetic images.  A dialectic tension is produced here, bringing a meaning to Canarian art’s outcome. The horizon is both the finishing line and the starting point. In 1930s insular vanguards, the breaking of mythical space limits obeyed a metaphysical boost.
