20TH AND 21ST CENTURIES PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES AND OTHER MEDIA
The systematically built collection of 20th century Slovak art, including the period after 2000, follows three basic lines. The first line represents the monitoring of individual styles and tendencies through the critical works of their most significant representatives. The second line documents the development of individual artists, represented by the selection of works from both the early and high periods. The third line is connected to the nature of the city gallery, and therefore part of the collection is dedicated to Bratislava, its representations in the course of decades, focusing on historical events and portraits of leading personalities who significantly contributed to the development of the city in various areas.
The collection of 20th century art includes a representative collection of works by Hungarian artists living in Slovakia until 1918 (Mednyánszky, Halász-Hradil, Mallý, Augusta, Murmann etc.), a magnificent collection of works from the inter-war period (Majsch, Spányik, Angyal, Rigele, Kühmayer etc.), collection of works by the founders of the Slovak modern art (Jaszusch, Fulla, Galanda, Bazovský, Alexy, Palugyay, Weiner-Kráľ, Sokol, Jakoby, Šimerová etc.), collection of works by artists of the generation entering the art scene before and during WWII (Majerník, Mudroch, Hložník, Zmeták, Chmel, Guderna, Milly, Kostka, Majerský etc.) as well as a wide range of works from the period of the so-called socialist realism. The collection also offers an overview of oeuvre of artists working alone (Jakoby, Uher, Paštéka, Jankovič, Čunderlík etc.) and as part of an art group (Group of Mikuláš Galanda, the 29th August Art Group etc.) from 1957 to the late 1960s. Last three decades of the 20th century art are represented by a comprehensive and systematic compilation. The gallery also tries to complete the collection of works from the 1990s when the regular acquisition was prevented by a lack of resources.
The most recent acquisition policy (since 2002) focuses on the establishment of an independent collection of “other media”, initiated by Richard Gregor. The nature of the new collection has been shaped by early works of the Slovak conceptualism from 1964 to the 1970s (Koller, Bartoš, Filko, Sikora, Mlynárčik, Laky, Ďurček etc.). The collection has been continuously supplemented.
