The Centre of Contemporary Art in Bratislava and the City Gallery of Bratislava present Ján Vasilko (born 1979), the last year’s winner of the Oskar Čepan Prize 2005, at the exhibition of New Paintings. The artist graduated from the Department of Visual Arts and Intermedia at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Technology in Košice (1999-2005). The exhibition, entitled Studies for a Utopian Tower, shows the most representative series of paintings from 2005 to 2006 created after his return from the study stay in the United States.

His remarkable contemporary monuments, towers and memorials rise proudly on large-format canvases. These rigorous architectures and elevated structures are descendants of past utopias (particularly those of Russian Constructivism: Tatlin’s towers and El Lissitzky’s Proun objects), representing at the same time new social constructions – romantic planning and personal projections of constructor’s dreams of a better society with a radical dictate of art.

They appear on grey surfaces, depicted as huge tower-like constructions, excised skeletons, striking illusions of “cloud climbers”. However, it is not quite clear whether they are symbols of monuments of the future or remains of industrial waste, a pile of scrap iron of “drowned” utopian visions. In these static one-act plays of towers (between reconstruction and revolt) Vasilko has managed to exploit dynamic and lively painting scenes full of illusion, melancholia, desire, absurdity and dry humour.
