Celtic mint in Bratislava

Place:
Pálffyho palác, Panská 19
Celtic mint in Slovakia

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of heritage maintenance the MÚOP (Mestský ústav ochrany pamiatok v Bratislave (City institute for heritage preservation in Bratislava)) in cooperation with GMB prepared a project of renovation of the permanent exposition of the Celtic ironwork and minting. The exhibition presents the results of the archaeological survey, realised by MÚOP and SNM (Slovak National Museum) in the years 1981-1985 in the spaces of Pálffy palace in the Panská Street 19. Since the last exhibition numerous discoveries were made which enriched our knowledge about the problematic of the Celtic crafts production in the area of the city: finds of kilns (Hlavné Sq., Uršulínska St., Radničná St. 1), ironwork workshops (Ventúrska St. 12/Zelená St. 10, Michalská St. 9) and an iron melting furnace (Rudnayovo Sq. 4). At the same time we recorded increase of the number of coins found during the archaeological surveys in the related findings. Until now the largest collection of technical ceramics origins from the Celtic workshop in Panská St. 19 – 75 ironwork melting pots and 22 dosing griddles – used for processing and melting of silver, which can be considered as unambiguous evidence of minting activity in the area of Bratislava’s oppidum.
The permanent exposition will be reopened for the public from the 12 December 2008 in Pálffy palace, Panská 19.
The project is realised with financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.
